DILI, 10 february 2022 (TATOLI) – The Council of Ministers (CoM) approved Timor-Leste’s National Family Planning Policy, presented by the Minister of Health, Odete Maria Freitas Belo.
The Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Fidélis Magalhães said that the Council of Ministers had previously discussed the National Family Planning Policy in 2015.

“This policy aims to adapt the concepts of integrated and culturally appropriate family planning program to the context of Timor-Leste, taking into account the political commitment that motivated national adherence to the United Nations International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD),” he said.
Magalhães stressed that family planning is essential for reducing maternal mortality and empowering women through medical genetics and marriage counseling, information on methods and provision of means of contraception, treatment of infertility, prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, and vaginal cancer screening.
Contraception methods are also privileged instruments for protecting the health of mothers and children, preventing abortion, and ensuring the health-related quality of life in family members.
