DILI, 17 february 2022 (TATOLI) – The Government of Japan has provided around US$ 20 million to support Timor-Leste’s Covid-19 response.

“Our assistance to Timor-Leste’s Covid-19 response, particularly to combat the pandemic is totaling US$20 million,” Japanese Ambassador to Timor-Leste, Kinefuchi Masami told reporters at SAMES Central Warehouse, in Dili, on thursday.

He said Japan has been supporting the government of Timor-Leste with financial support through two big programs: “The first program was the provision of the US$870.000 to the Ministry of Health last year to respond to the Covid-19. This year, we provide another US$1.2 million through UNICEF for the procurement of the three refrigerated vehicles, build the logistic and cold chain capacity at the nation and sub-national level, and vaccine storage and distribution. This US$1.2 million is part of the US$20 million financial support.”

Today (17/02), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Government of Japan handed over three units of refrigerated vehicles (TOYOTA HILUX REVO 2.8 4X4 6 M/T SINGLE CAB) to the Ministry of Health (MoH) to support and help for timely distribution of vaccines to regional warehouse and health facilities.

“These three vehicles were part of the US$1.2 million that the Government of Japan has been committed to supporting the Ministry of Health this year,” Kinefuchi said.

“We also assisted Timor-Leste with 168.000 doses of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines to help protect the people of Timor-Leste from Covid-19,” he said.

In august 2021, Timor-Leste received a total of 168.000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines donated by the Government of Japan through the COVAX Facility. The vaccines were airlifted into Timor-Leste on 13 august on a flight chartered by UNICEF utilizing a part of the US$ 1 billion contributions from the Government of Japan to the COVAX Facility.

Kinefuchi stressed that the vaccination was really important for Timor-Leste to fight against the Covid-19.

“I hope that the support given by the Government of Japan to Timor-Leste will be a great help for Timorese people,” he said.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Timor-Leste and Japan has always committed to assisting Timor-Leste’s national development, he stressed.
