DILI, 21 february 2022 (TATOLI)- The Association of Disability of Timor – Leste (ADTL) together with the Secretary State for Youths and Sport (SSYS) and the Institute of Business (IOB) today launched the Narrative Research Assessment on the Needs of Youths with Disabilities (YwD) in Timor – Leste (TL).
The assessment of the needs of persons with disabilities in Timor-Leste was conducted from 27 september to 30 october 2021 with a duration of one month. This research was conducted in seven municipalities namely; Dili, Bobonaro, Oe-cusse, Ermera, Viqueque, Baucau and Aileu with a sample of 155 people from the Blind, Deaf and Physically Disabled.
The result shows that 42% of Young People with Disabilities are still in school 42%, 48% of women access to education while those of men only 31%. 27% of youth with disabilities do not access education, 27% have found work, 40% of youth with disabilities work in the private sector, 24% of people with disabilities work in government agencies, 21% of people with disabilities run businesses and 12% of youths’ people with disabilities work as farmers.
ADTL Executive Director, Cesario da Silva, informed that ADTL in collaboration with SSYS and IOB conducted a Narrative Research study on the needs of youth with disabilities to find out the priority needs needed by youth with disabilities and would be recommended to persons with disabilities. government to consider.
“Results of the Narrative Research on the Needs of Youth with Disabilities, launched today, the aim of the study is to evaluate the situation of Persons with Disabilities based on their needs in accordance with the Constitution of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, Article 50 paragraph 1 which states that “All citizens, women or men men have the right and the obligation to do work and are free to choose their profession,” ADTL executive director, Cesario da Silva told reporters at the Saint Paulo Auditorium, Comoro, Dili today.
The ADTL executive director explained that the narrative of this assessment research is very important because with this research ADTL can identify the desired needs of youth with disabilities in Timor-Leste and any difficulties faced by youth with disabilities will be recommended to the Government for solutions.
ADTL executive director Cesario, added that research conducted by IOB showed that most youth with disabilities were still in school and around 42% wanted to continue their education to a higher level of education. Therefore, based on the results of this research, ADTL will recommend to the Government to find solutions to address the needs of youth with disabilities in Timor-Leste.
“Many youths with disabilities want to continue their education to a higher level, therefore based on the results of this research ADTL will recommend to the Government, through SSYS, to provide scholarships to youth with disabilities who want to continue their education,” Director of ADTL, Cesario said.
The Director General of SSYS, David Thomas de Deus highly appreciates the results of the Narrative Research Study on the needs of youth with disabilities because with this result the Government through SSYS including competent parties will evaluate and can provide scholarships to youth with disabilities who wish to continue their education.
“The government through SSYS always cooperates with ADTL and other Associations of Persons with Disabilities to support its programs, all people with disabilities have the same rights and obligations to get a better life in accordance with the motto Don’t Let Others Stand Behind, that’s why all the recommendations from ADTL we will consider it,” Director General David Thomas de Deus said.
In the same place, a researcher from the College of Institute of Business, Juviano Xavier appreciated the cooperation between ADTL and IOB because ADTL wants to fight for the fate of Youth with Disabilities in Timor-Leste through research to identify the needs of youth with disabilities in Timor-Leste.
“IOB is very honored to be trusted by ADTL to conduct a Narrative Research Assessment of the needs of youth with disabilities in Timor-Leste and today we are jointly launching the results of this research, we hope that the findings of this research will assist ADTL in developing its educational program according to the needs of persons with disabilities. disability in Timor-Leste,” IOB researcher Juviano Xavier said.
Meanwhile, the results of the Narrative Research on Youth with Disabilities in Timor-Leste will be used by ADTL to carry out a comprehensive action plan in combating the plight of Youth with Disabilities in order to have a better life as citizens of Timor-Leste.
The Narrative Assessment Research of Youth with Disabilities was programmed by ADTL, funded by the Secretary of State for Youth and Sports with a total budget of $5,000 and facilitated by the Institute of Business as a research team.
