DILI, 01 march 2022 (TATOLI) – European Union (EU) Ambassadors to Timor-Leste, New Zealand, United States of America, Portugal and France met today with the Timorese Prime Minister, Taur Matan Ruak, to ask the country to vote on the United Nations (UN) resolution condemning Russia’s attack on Ukraine.
“We are working with Timor-Leste as well as other countries in the world to issue a strong resolution condemning Russia. We also ask for the war in Ukraine to end,” said EU Ambassador to Timor-Leste Andrew Jacobs in statements to journalists, at the end of the meeting with the Head of Government, at Farol, in Dili.
The diplomat is pleased that Timor-Leste has the same view as several countries regarding the war in Ukraine.
“It is important for all countries in the world to vote on UN resolutions that help the Ukrainian people against Russia,” he concluded.
It is recalled that Russia launched, on the 24th, a military offensive in Ukraine, with ground forces and bombing in several cities. So far, there have been more than 350 deaths.
According to the document from the Timorese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, the country expresses concern about the current situation in Ukraine.
“We urge the parties involved in the conflict for an immediate ceasefire and to seek a diplomatic solution. Given the past of Indonesian occupation, Timor-Leste recognizes that the war does not benefit anyone. Ukraine’s independence must be respected.”
