CNE urges Presidential Candidates to respect the signing of the Pact of National Unity

DILI, 07 march 2022 (TATOLI) – The President of the National Electoral Commission (CNE), José da Costa Belo urges all the Presidential candidates to respect the signing of the National Unity Pact.

“We respectfully request all candidates for the President of the Republic, who have signed the Pact of National Unity on 28 february which declared that, do not insult each other during the campaign, must be implemented. If not implemented, their reputation will be dirty in the public, both nationally and internationally,” the President of CNE, José Belo told reporters at the CNE’s Media Centre, Colmera, Dili this monday.

CNE continues to argue with all candidates to avoid insulting each other in the process of campaigning in front of supporters because it can emerge the problems between supporters A and B.

“The better one is that each candidate of the President of the Republic just explains what program is being carried out to the voters, in order that the voters can use rational thinking to choose the presidential candidate based on their wishes,” President of CNE José Belo said.

To become the President of the Republic, must love everyone, avoid abusive language, respect each other with other candidates of the President of the Republic to avoid insults, prioritize the peace because of that, every presidential candidate must urge their supporters to avoid violence because otherwise the candidate of President of the Republic his reputation will be dirty in public, both nationally and internationally.

CNE also requested that, the candidates of the Presidential Republic who cancel their campaigns at places which is approved by CNE, must be informed CNE to reschedule to avoid a collision between the candidates of the Presidential A and B and also CNE can make adjustments to organize the international observers, national observers and the National Police of Timor–Leste (PNTL) to oversee the campaign process.

CNE also urges the candidates of President of the Republic, to campaign according to CNE’s schedule, based on the agreement of the candidates of the President of the Republic and their success teams, to avoid clashes and violence as happened in the municipal of Baucau which is done by the two supporters of the candidate of the President of the Republic from the Fretilin party and KHUNTO party, that not respecting the campaign schedule which is issued by CNE.

The PNTL has investigated the violence which was done by the supporters of the presidential candidates of the Republic from the Fretilin party and the KHUNTO‘s party to take the responsibility, based on the law in force in Timor–Leste.
