DILI, 16 march 2022 (TATOLI) – The ambassador of the European Union in Timor-Leste (EU), Andrew Jacobs, has stated that students of the Institute of Business (IOB) can become entrepreneurs in the future. They have to respect the rights of consumers in Timor-Leste.
Ambassador of the European Union, Andrew Jacobs said the Advocacy program on consumer rights is more important to share with students at all university levels.
“Normally students are always purchasing some school’s material and other products in the supermarket. Otherwise their right is being violated. Students must ensure comprehensive of consumer’s right,” Ambassador of the European Union, Andrew Jacobs told reports at IOB University, Manleuana, this wednesday.
It is not only for the students but all consumers in Timor-Leste have the right to consume any products. This requires understanding what kind of the right they have.
EU is a partnership with TANE Consumer Association on providing advocacy on juridical on defending consumers rights.
Mr. Jacobs added everyone should understand consumer rights based on Timor-Leste decree laws. Thus they will be a victim of consuming products that are selling in the markets.
“Every day people buy all products in the market. The consumers must understand a reasonable price based on the marking price which has been established by a relevant government institution,” He said.
It is also most required for the healthy product and it will be not affected for public health. It does not require the assistance of expired products in the market.
The European Union in Timor-Leste is in partnership with TANE Consumer Association to respond on this issue in Timor-Leste. The EU trusts the TANE association to provide adequate information to defend consumer rights.
President of TANE consumer association, António Ramos da Silva said the Association is working on affording to provide adequate information to the students as they are the future of employers.
“Today we have a seminar for students at the Institute of Business (IOB) as before we have provided seminars with other universities composed of the National University of Timor-Leste (UNTL), UNPAZ, UNDIL, and others”.
Mr. Silva stressed that accessibility of information for all consumers is very important and It helps the employers not violate consumer rights.
The Vice-Rector of IOB University, Antonio Soares Martins said the initiative of this Seminar comes from the coordination between the University with TANE consumer Association.
The students from three different departments benefited from this program composed of Business, entrepreneurs, and marketing.
Mr. Martins said students must be fully comprehensive on consumer rights and even for the duty of a seller.
It is most required for defending consumer rights. A consumer has to know to give a complaint if there are some damaged products. The complaint can be linked to the official TANE Association website and can be in another link on social media.
TANE association is consistent to help the consumer’s complaints to solve this issue based on the decree laws.
The European Union in Timor-Leste (EU) provided 720.000 euro for TANE Consumer Association to develop advocacy on consumer rights in Timor-Leste.
