DILI, 16 march 2022 (TATOLI)-The Election Analyst of European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) in Timor – Leste, Margarida Alves, informed that since EU EOM took place on 02 march until now had observed 115 campaign activities in across the Timor – Leste.
“EU EOM since 02 of march until now had observed the activities of electoral Presidential ’s campaign on 16 candidates in across the Timor–Leste but the substance of campaign ‘s activities will be announced to the public on 21 march after the Presidential‘s election, we still not yet concluded, whereas there are electoral campaign violation which is committed by each candidates or supporter in doing the 2022 Presidential campaign or not. EU EOM will use the observation methodology and then will be announced completely through the official press release on 21 march in Hotel Timor after the Presidential ‘s election on 19 march 2022,’’ the Election Analyst of EU EOM in Timor – Leste Margarida Alves told TATOLI in Hotel – Timor, Colmera, Dili, on this wednesday.
The European Union Election Observation Mission is headed by Chief Observer Domènec Ruizs Devesa, a member of European Parliament since 2019. The EU EOM is further composed of a Core Team of eight election analysts, who arrived in Dili in mid february. The mission also has 26 Long – Term Observation from 17 different EU member states who were deployed across the country on 25 february.
EU observers will follow all stages of the electoral process, including the campaign period, polling, counting and any electoral disputes. They will also undertake a comprehensive monitoring of traditional and social media. A number of locally recruited Short Observers will reinforce the mission on election day. Around 50 local Timorese staff are supporting the work of the mission. The EU EOM will remain in the country until the completion of the electoral process.
Election observation is an essential component of European Union activities to promote democracy, human rights and the role of law. Election observation can contribute to strengthening democratic institutions, build public confidence in the electoral process and help to deter fraud, intimidation and electoral violence.
“The mission will issue a preliminary statement shortly after election day. A final report, which will include a set of recommendations for the future electoral process, will be presented and shared with stakeholders after finalization of the entire electoral process,’’ Election Analyst Margarida ALVES added.
The main key of the EU EOM observes are: The legal framework and its application. The registration of parties and candidates. The Performance of the electoral administration. The conduct of the election campaign. The use of public resources during the campaign. Fairness of candidates’ access to the media. Respect for the Universal rights of freedom of expression and assembly. Voting, counting and tabulation procedures. Any eventual appeals and complaints.
