DILI, 22 march 2022 (TOTAL)- The Secretary of State for Environment protection considers flora and fauna conservation can bring the benefit of economic sustainability. It also can contribute to reducing climate change which is affected by the climate hazards.

The National Director of biodiversity, Rui dos Reis Pires said the conservation of flora and fauna is most important for the government of Timor-Leste through the secretary of state for Environment protection.
“The government has full responsibility to protect the extinction of flora and fauna in Timor-Leste. The species are the Timorese richness and needed to protect to avoid extinction in the earth and even in the ocean,” Director Rui Dos Reis Pires told TATOLI Agency, in his office, Fomento, this tuesday.
He added that the government of Timor has ratified the on ensuring the protection for flora and fauna, based on constitution laws article 61. It is also reflected in the Biodiversity laws focus on No. 6/2020. The laws are ensuring the protection of the sustainability of Timorese natural resources.
The Article 61 (Environment) of the Republic of democratic of Timor-Leste describes that 1). Everyone has the right to a humane, healthy and ecologically balanced environment and the duty to protect and improve it for the benefit of future generations. 2). The State recognizes the need to preserve and enhance natural resources. 3). The State must promote actions to defend the environment and safeguard the sustainable development of the economy.
The reforestation of different species of trees in the hills and sea’s side are able to prevent eruption and also conserve the healthy atmosphere.
The laws also include the punishment for any destruction committed by a human being to destroy the assistance of flora and fauna. It is focused on the penal code describing on 215 to 221 focus on environment protection.
It is required for any action through the cultural manner which was decided by the Timorese ancestor called “TARA BANDU’’. This way is helping to limit people’s habit of destroying the species of flora and fauna in Timor-Leste.
“Tara Bandu” is an instrument on natural protection described in Decree-law article 8.SEA has provided appropriate information for the community to not damage the flora and fauna. Most well known flora and fauna species are almost extinct in Timor-Leste as mermaid, rainbow lorikeet, deer, and others.
He stressed that Timor Leste also has a diversity of natures which can be benefited from producing medicine and cosmetic products, which can be an advantage on the economic part. People can be able to get some income on the products.
The conservation of mermaid species is more requested in Timor-Leste and even globally. Thus, the UN CVD through Global Environment Fund has provided 8.30 million USD to SEA to protect biodiversity in Timor-Leste, especially focusing on mermaid species.
The mermaid species can be found in Tasi Tolu, Manatuto, Kom and Atabae Seaside.
Mermaid species is one of unique creatures which can only be found in the eighth countries across the world such as: Papua Negaunee, Indonesia, Salomon Island, Timor-Leste and others.
