DILI, 04 april 2022 (TATOLI) – The Timorese’s National Parliament will soon ratify the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and the Agreement on Mobility between the Member States of the Commonwealth of Countries of Portuguese Language (CPLP).
“The National Parliament has already sent these two proposals to Commission A to proceed with their analysis within 15 days and be later ratified”, said the President of the National Parliament, Aniceto Guterres, in the plenary session.
It is recalled that the Government approved, on February 2nd, the ratification of Timor-Leste’s accession to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
The Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Fidélis Magalhães, said that the convention aims to prohibit the use of nuclear weapons, in addition to their production, testing and storage.
Fidélis also highlighted the importance of Timor-Leste’s adherence to the aforementioned treaty, stressing that, as a sovereign country, it has the legitimacy to present its point of view on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons in the world.
“As a member of the international community, Timor-Leste appeals to the most advanced countries that are developing weapons not to threaten other countries”, he said.
It is recalled that the Council of Ministers approved, on February 9, the signing of the Mobility Agreement between the CPLP Member States in Luanda.
According to the official, the agreement will allow greater mobility among the citizens of the Member States within the CPLP space.
It is recalled that the CPLP Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation signed, on July 17, 2021, the Mobility Agreement between the countries assigned to the organization, after its approval by the Heads of State and Government at the XXVI Meeting of the Council of CPLP Ministers, which took place in Luanda, Angola.
