EU-MOE: Timor-Leste managed to hold elections peacefully

DILI, 20 april 2022 (TATOLI)—The European Union (EU) Election Observation Mission (MOE) assessed that the voting process in Timor-Leste (TL) went very well during the Presidential Election on 19 April 2022.

MOE-EU Chief Observer, Doménec Ruiz Devesa said voting in the TL was regulated in an orderly manner by the electoral authorities with the presence of a strong candidate team and national monitors providing transparency in all processes.

“EU observers assessed that the voting and the vote-counting process went very well,” said Doménec Ruiz Devesa, at a press conference held in Hotel Timor on Wednesday.

Devesa underlined that the election was competitive, and the campaign was very peaceful despite the personal attacks on social media in the final days of the campaign were continued.

Ruiz Devesa also gave an example that many women participated in the campaign although some paid less attention to women’s empowerment compared to the first round of campaigns.

Ruiz Devesa explains his mission has had permanent experience across the country since mid-February, and his findings are based on direct observations from about 200 campaigns and more than 1,000 interviews.

On election day, more than 40 EU observers monitored more than 160 polling stations across 12 municipalities including Oecusse-Ambeno (RAEOA).

This EU Electoral Mission Preliminary Statement is delivered before the completion of the electoral process. Critical stages remain, including tabulation of results and adjudication of the final petition. MOE – EU remains in the country to observe the rest of the electoral process.
