DILI, 14 june 2022 (TATOLI) – Director of Association of Disability in Timor-Leste (ADTL), Cezario da Silva, urges the National Parliament (NP) to accelerate the process of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) which has been nationally ratified by the Government through the Council of Ministers on 4 May 2022.
“The context of the UNCRPD ratification was ratified nationally by the council of ministers on May 04. That’s a positive thing but the National Parliament must continue to accelerate its process of passing to protect the lives of people with disabilities based on priority programs, initiated by every Organization of Persons with Disabilities in Timor – Leste” ADTL Director Cezario da Silva told Tatoli via phone.
He added that the ratification of UNCRDP was very important because it served as a legal basis to provide opportunities for persons with disabilities to adjust priority programs to promote the rights.
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) is the first legally binding international instrument that sets minimum standards for the rights of persons with disabilities.
The objective of this Convention is to promote, protect and ensure the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all persons with disabilities, and to promote respect for their inherent dignity.
It applies the human rights principles laid down in the United Nations Declaration on Human Rights to the situation of persons with disabilities. This includes civil and political rights to equal treatment and freedom from discrimination, social and economic rights in areas such as education, health care, employment, and transportation.
States that ratify the United Nations Conventions are committed to granting civil and political rights to persons with disabilities.
