DILI, 23 june 2022 (TATOLI) – Conservation International (CI) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF) actualize the protected area sustainable to the local leader of Municipalities in Timor – Leste. The objective is to develop a pathway forward and next steps for key financing strategies and stakeholders to identify the road mapping of protected and then will put the budged to preserve the protected area in Timor – Leste.
Vice Minster of MAF, Abilio Xavier de Araujo, appreciates the worked which is conducted by the Conservation International to support the Government and Communities in creating development and support systems for conservation areas in protected areas at the national level through a project which is funded by the Global Environment Facility to build a system on the protected area to preserve the National Park of Timor – Leste and improve the forest ecosystem management in Timor – Leste.
“MAF and CI have become working partners to manage the protected area which is planned to be funded by the Global Environment Facility, so we invite local municipal authorities to participate in the seminar to update information about systems and finances on protected area management in municipalities in across the Timor – Leste,” Vice Minister of MAF Abilio Xavier de Araujo told TATOLI at the Arbiru Hotel, Bebonuk, Dili on Thursday.
He added that the Conservation International had supported the Government of Timor-Leste through MAF to establish a national system in two protected areas, such as the Protected Area Fatumasin, in the Municipality of Likisa, Sub Administrative Bazartete, and the Protected area of Legumao in the municipality of Bacau, and Lautem at the protected area of Laga, Baguia, Luro, and Iliomar.
To implement the two projects in the protected areas. Conservation International with consultants from Starling Resources has provided training to the technical in carrying out sustainable financial design in the two protected areas.
He explained that the Government through MAF had marked stakes in the two protected areas to avoid the communities cutting down trees.
The Legumao protected area has 17.88 hectares and Fatumasin has 4,1973 hectares.
At the same place, the Manager of Conservation International Nathan Conaboy informed Conservation International during this time, had worked together with the MAF by supporting the technical assistant to train the staff of MAF on how to create the reforestation in the protected areas and recently had supported the Government of Timor-Leste through MAF to establish a national system in two protected areas, such as the Protected Area Fatumasin, in the Municipality of Likisa, Sub Administrative Bazartete and the Protected area of Legumao in the municipality of Baucau, and Lautem at the protected area of Laga, Baguia, Luro, and Iliomar.
“We will continue to support the technical assistant and financial support through the Global Environment Facility to preserve the protected areas across the Timor – Leste.
Based on the plan Global Environment Facility will support $USD 1,660.000 to MAF to preserve the protected areas of Fatumasin and Legumao to improve the forest ecosystem management in Timor – Leste.
