New Zealand will support NZ$38 million to develop three important sectors in Timor-Leste

DILI, 28 june 2022 (TATOLI) – New Zealand will support NZ$38 million to Timor – Leste to develop the economic, security, and education sectors in Timor – Leste.

The Divisional Manager, Global, and Scholarship of New Zealand, Joanna Kempkers, said that Timor-Leste’s relationship with New Zealand started when Timor-Leste fought for independence until now, saying the financial support which is given by New Zealand is a form of solidarity to build Timor-Leste in the future.

“New Zealand will support NZ$38 million to Timor-Leste to develop economic diversification, education, and security over the next 3 years,” Divisional Manager, Global, and Scholarship of New Zealand, Joanna Kempkers told TATOLI after attending the 3rd High-Level Consultation Meeting between Timor-Leste and New Zealand at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, in Pantai Kelapa Dili.

She said this support is to diversify the economy in the area of developing coffee and other products such as cocoa. In addition, New Zealand has developed the capacity of the Timor-Leste National Police (PNTL) to provide security for the people of Timor-Leste in a professional manner, and in the future, New Zealand will continue to develop the PNTL through the Community Policing program in Timor-Leste.

Meanwhile, in the education sector, Joanna said, New Zealand will focus on early education for kindergarten children because early education is very important to pursue their dreams of developing Timor – Leste in the future.

“New Zealand had offered many scholarships to continue their study in New Zealand because we realize that education is the key to the progress of a country, therefore New Zealand will continue to support the education sector to advance Timor – Leste in the future,”

The 3rd High-Level Consultation Meeting between Timor – Leste and New Zealand continues to discuss the bilateral relations in the sectors of economic, and security education including agriculture and fisheries in Timor – Leste.

Director-General for Bilateral Affairs, MoFAC Timor – Leste, Domingos Savio, said the 3rd High-Level Consultation Meeting between Timor – Leste and New Zealand is to strengthen the bilateral relation between Timor – Leste and New Zealand to continue, working together in the area of security, education, agriculture community Policing, Defense and many others development supporting that New Zealand had supported to Timor – Leste.

“We know that New Zealand has been a strong bilateral relationship with us since Timor – Leste gets its independence. New Zealand has also been committed as a permanent partner to develop Timor – Leste through the cooperation in various areas such as Education, Security, Community Policing, Agriculture, Defense, and the others,” said Savio.

Savio said, this meeting also discussed the opportunity for Trade and Investment, where New Zealand will invest in Timor – Leste, and Timor-Leste to invest in New Zealand.
