Horta: Strengthening bilateral ties with Vietnam is essential to improve TL’s agricultural sector

DILI, 11 july 2022 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, José Ramos Horta said Timor-Leste needs to strengthen its bilateral ties with Vietnam in the agricultural sector to improve the nation’s agricultural productivity.

President Horta said in a meeting with the CEO of Viettel Timor-Leste Unip Lda (Telemor), Tran van Bang, at the Presidential Palace, today.

During the meeting, Horta thanked Telemor for its investment in ICT, Digitalization, and telecommunication in Timor-Leste.

Apart from ICT, Digitalization, and Telecommunication, Horta said Timor-Leste needs to cooperate with Vietnam in the agricultural sector.

Thus, President Horta expressed his support to those Vietnamese investors who are interested to invest in Timor-Leste, especially in other sectors: “Timor-Leste must strengthen its bilateral ties with Vietnam to improve agricultural productivity.”

Vietnam has made remarkable agricultural progress in recent decades, making it one of the largest rice exporter countries in the world.

On average, a year, Vietnam produces about 26-28 million tons of rice, besides domestic consumption, the export volume of rice is about 6-6.5 million tons/year.

Last month, the Government of Timor-Leste, through the National Logistics Center (CLN) imported nearly 5.000 tons of rice from Vietnam.

The Government has committed to developing Timor-Leste’s productive sector, especially the agriculture sector to ensure food security and combat malnutrition in the country.
