DILI, 22 august 2022 (TATOLI) – The Deputy Prime Minister of the Vatican Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra is officially announced to visit Timor-Leste next month to inaugurate the new embassy of the Holy See in Dili.

The visit of Cardinal Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra was officially announced by the Ambassador of the Holy See to Timor-Leste, Monsignor Marco Sprizzi, after having a meeting with Prime Minister Taur Matan Ruak, in Farol, Dili.

“In our meeting today, we mainly focused our discussion on the upcoming visit of the Vatican Deputy Prime Minister, ‘Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra’ to Timor-Leste, in september to inaugurate the new embassy of the Vatican in Dili,” Sprizzi told reporters after meeting Prime Minister Ruak, in Farol, Dili, on monday.

He said the visit of the right-hand man to Pope Francis to Timor-Leste will also affirm the importance of the adoption of the “Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together,” which had been adopted by the National Parliament, in may 2022.

“It was an extraordinary historical decision by Timor-Leste. Timor-Lese is the first country in the world, and the first parliament in the world to make this decision for fraternity, for brotherhood between peoples, and between all citizens,” Sprizzi said.

The “Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together,” was signed on february 4, 2019, in Abu Dhabi during the Pope’s visit to the United Arab Emirates. It seeks to promote a “culture of mutual respect” between the religions.

Sprizzi added Cardinal Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra’s visit will also to meet the people, the children, and the youth to celebrate a great mass at the Cathedral of Dili: “It’s going to be a beautiful celebration between the Holy See’s Deputy Prime Minister and Timorese people.”

He said Prime Minster and the government demonstrated their wiliness to support and accompany the visit of Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra to Timor-Leste.

“Prime Minister Ruak was enthusiastic about the visit, of course, he will receive Cardinal Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra in person. He was happy because this can be a preparation for what we expect the Holy Father has often said that he will visit Timor-Leste in the near future. Again, Prime Minister was very happy and grateful for this visit,” Sprizzi emphasized.

He concluded that during the meeting, they also highlighted the importance of the Holy Father appointing Archbishop Virgílio do Carmo da Silva as the first Cardinal in Timor-Leste’s history.
