DILI, 25 august 2022 (TATOLI)- Timor – Leste Press Council (TLPC) today organize two days of the Dili Dialogue Forum (DDF), from 25 – 26 august 2022 to share exchange the experience of press freedom and also freedom of expression to each other.
The Chairmen of Timor – Leste Press Council, Virgilio Guterres, inform that, Dili Dialogue Forum is established in 2017 based on the Dili Declaration which is signed by the Chairman of Indonesia’s Press Council, Myanmar Press Council, Thailand Press Council, Indonesia Press Council and Timor – Leste Press Council.
“Based on the Dili Declaration today TLPC organize the Dili Dialogue Forum during two days to invite the Chairmen of Indonesia Press Council, Myanmar Press Council, Thailand Press Council and take this opportunity to invite also the representative of Press Council from Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea (PNG) with the aim for exchanging of sharing experience about the Freedom of Press and also freedom of expression in each country beside of changing the resource to each other,’’ Virgilio Guterres told reporters at the Commission of National Election‘s office, Colmera Dili on thursday.
The Chairman of Timor – Leste Press Council, Guterres, added that the central theme which is presented in this Dili Dialog Forum is “Media Challenges in Timor – Leste, and Southeast Asia’’.
Following the theme for this year, Guterres explained that the challenges facing media in Timor – Leste, are about the competition between the mainstream media and online media, adding that mainstream media has been unable to compete with online media in Timor – Leste, Therefore, all mainstream media owners are encouraged to carry out the strategies in dealing with this digitalization era.
“I urge the owners of mainstream media in Timor – Leste, to continue to exist to face the digitalization era by conducting the strategy to be able to compete with online media in Timor – Leste, through in-depth coverage, for the clients to continue read the news which is published to the public and must make a distinction between online media in Timor – Leste,” he said.
Another challenge which is faced by mainstream and conventional media in Timor – Leste was the lack of newspaper readers because many people have read information from social media through their Android phones quickly and accurately through online applications which are published by online media in Timor – Leste, which causes the client impact the mainstream media because
To maintain the existence of the print media, Guterres said:” the owner of mainstream media should continue to write the news history in different ways to maintain their existence in TL,”
Chavarong Limpattamapanne, Chairmain National Press Council of Thailand, stated that Thai Media has faced global challenges because at the moment almost the young generation prefers to use social media with the platform of Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter with video platform which quickly so it makes some mainstream had closed up but, the Thailand Press Council maintain to support and encourage some media mainstream to coverage the investigative reporting in Thailand, and at the moment a few mainstream media still exist in Thailand to produce the Government news through the newspaper to the public.
At the same place, the International Affairs Myanmar Press Council Aye Chan informed that the problem faced by Myanmar today is that, the public believes in hoaxes compared to news from the mainstream media, therefore the Myanmar Press Council continues to work hard to cooperate with all media, both online mainstream media Government and the other related state institutions to combat the hoax after military coops in Myanmar.
