DILI, september 26, 2022 (TATOLI)—The President of the Republic, José Ramos Horta, meets with the founder and chairman of the Open Society Foundations (OSF), George Soros in New York, United States.

According to Horta, Soros is now over 90 years old but he is in a healthy condition, he is a famous Billionaire and is also known as a strong and influential supporter of liberal social causes in the world.

Horta said a delegation from the Open Society Foundations had visited Timor-Leste to discuss specific programs that the Foundation wanted to implement, particularly in women’s business, private media, and world democracy.

“I saw how they would support the media in Timor-Leste, but I would like not to hear about ‘training’ support because training has been given many times, I would like to see how concrete support is to the media. Kindly provide a budget to support media equipment and infrastructure. So I will discuss a lot of issues to make sure they will provide more support to Timor-Leste,” Horta said in a statement issued by the office of the President on Monday.

Horta said, in turn, the Open Society Foundation is willing to support infrastructure for media institutions in Timor-Leste.

“Obviously the support I focus on is support for private media because State media such as RTTL, E.P, and Tatoli News Agency have been budgeted by the government, my number one concern is for private media which have shown their commitment as private media with their resources, includes ‘online’ to get support for ‘online’ as well. For private media I will seek support from governments and foundations from outside the country to support the equipment and infrastructure,” said Horta.

Meanwhile, Horta said, his side will seek support from other countries such as South Korea and other countries to support state media such as RTTL, but this requires coordination from the Government because Media Institutions have an important role to broadcast news information.

Prior to meeting with the Founder and Chairman of the Open Society Foundation Geroge Soros, Horta first met with Geroge Soros’ son Alex Soros and the former British Deputy Prime Minister, as well as the current CEO of the Open Society Foundation to discuss the agenda of the meeting with Geroge Soros.
