UN Resident Coordinator bids farewell to President Horta

DILI, 04 october 2022 (TATOLI) – Roy Trivedy, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Timor-Leste, today bid farewell to the President of the Republic, Jose Ramos Horta as his mandate comes to an end.

Roy Trivedy has served in Timor-Leste as UN Coordinator for more than four years. He has been working in the country since march 2018.

He was previously UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Representative in Papua New Guinea from december 2013 to december 2017.

Speaking to reporters after meeting President Horta, Trivedy said: “Today, I met President Jose Ramos Horta to thank him for his support and encouragement during my mandate as UN Resident Coordinator in Timor-Leste.”

“I would like to thank all people for their support during my four-year mission in Timor-Leste, including politicians, ministers, vice ministers, states secretaries, government officials, civil societies, development partners, and communities. I would also like to thank my UN colleagues and my family for their support during the challenging time, especially the Covid-19 and April Flash Flood,” said Trivedy.

He said in terms of development, Timor-Leste is now in a better position compared with four years ago: “It’s part of the result of the cooperation between the national leaders and the people with the support of all development partners in the country.”

“I am proud that the UN System in Timor-Leste had made a significant contribution to the progress in Timor-Leste. This country needs to continue making the progress as the world will face more challenges in the future,” said Trivedy.

He called on the Timorese people to continue working to build a prosperous, sustainable, healthy, and happy Timor-Leste for all: “I will keep supporting Timor-Leste in many ways.”

During his four-year mandate, Roy Trivedy was responsible for leading and strategically positioning the UNCT in support of national priorities, development strategies, and plans.

His responsibilities also include assisting the Government of Timor-Leste and key development partners to prepare for and respond to, major humanitarian disasters.

Trivedy also has responsibilities for the safety and security of all UN staff and their dependents in the country.

Roy Trivedy has worked in international development for more than three decades. Previously he worked for the Department for International Development, UK for 13 years in various roles in the UK, Africa, and Asia. He joined the UK Civil Service after 20 years of working for non-governmental organizations including Oxfam and Save The Children in the UK, Mozambique, India, and Malawi. He studied at the Institute for Development Studies, Sussex after completing a law degree at the University of Sheffield, UK.
