Timor-Leste to intensify cooperation with Portugal in education

DILI, 14 november 2022 (TATOLI) – The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (MoEYS) has announced that it will intensify, with Portugal, cooperation on two projects in the field of education and training. The first project is Centers of Learning and School Training (CAFE). Under this project, schools will be built in the municipalities of Dili, Baucau and Bobonaro. The second project is called PRO-Portuguese Project.

Education Minister, Armindo Maia, said that the ministry has already presented a proposal to the Prime Minister, Taur Matan Ruak, for the renewal or extension of contracts of a number of projects.

The Ministry had foreseen budget from the 2023 State Budget for Project CAFE.

Maia said that the Government also intends to renew the PRO-Portuguese Project, which is important to provide Portuguese language training for Timorese teachers.

“Around 400 teachers will benefit from the PRO-Portuguese Project. We also want to extend the training with some other subjects, including mathematics, physics, and chemistry,” he added.

The Government will work in partnership with Portuguese-speaking countries to support teacher training in Timor-Leste.
