DILI, 23 november 2022 (TATOLI) – World Vision in collaboration with the Secretary of State for Youth and Sport (SoSYS) will support developing life skills amongst Timorese youths in rural areas.

Through this collaboration, World Vision and SoSYS would help children to attain the core cognitive, emotional, social, and essential life skills they need to reach their full potential to lead productive and fulfilling lives.

Life skills are abilities for adaptive and positive behavior that enable humans to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of life.

World Vision spokesperson, Humbelino Pereira, said that the objective of this collaboration is to increase the skills of rural youth, particularly in World Vision’s focus areas, including the municipalities of Aielu, Baucau, Bobonaro, and Covalima.

He said the opportunity was only given to the four municipalities due to the capacity of World Vision, saying that with the support of SoSYS, the program could be extended to other municipalities in the future.

“Young people aged 12 and above will be the main target of our program We will help them to be more critical in making decisions for their life,” Humbelino Pereira said at the SEJD office on wednesday.

Secretary of State Abrão Saldanha appreciated World Vision’s initiative to support the Government in improving the skills of Timorese youth living in rural areas: “This program aligns with the SoSYS youth program that had been implemented to date.”

“It is important to reach out to support rural communities through this collaboration. With World Vision, we can help rural youth in areas that cannot be reached by the government,” Saldanha said.

He said life skills are something necessary for young Timorese to make a decision and find solutions to any difficulties they may face in the future: “Therefore, our young people need such life skills at an early age as it can change lives.”
