UNESCO organizes science and mathematics competitions for 400 students

DILI, 02 december, 2022 (TATOLI)– The United Nations Science and Culture Organization (UNESCO) organized a science and mathematics competition for more than 400 students from primary and secondary schools.

UNESCO Executive Secretary, Francisco Barreto said, this is a regular activity organized by UNESCO to support students to promote science and mathematics subjects.

“We are holding this expo activity in commemoration of the 2022 World Day of Science and Mathematics. This is a regular activity that we organize to help students explore their abilities in science and mathematics,” said UNESCO Executive Secretary, Francisco Barreto in his remarks, at Bairro Pite, Friday.

He said, 400 students from 50 elementary and high schools presented 118 different subjects but only 40 subjects passed to take part in this competition.

Member of Commission G of the National Parliament, Antonino Verdial, considers this activity important to improve students’ abilities in science and mathematics.

“I congratulate UNESCO for organizing this event to help students explore their abilities and skills in science and mathematics. This helps students to find new ideas in science using mathematical formulas,” he said.

At the same time, he encouraged all students to continue studying hard in science and mathematics as well as Portuguese to improve science in Timor-Leste.

A Mathematics teacher from Laiku Lospalos Elementary School, Bartolomeu Talang was proud to take part in this activity and won first place in this competition.

He said this competition encourages all students to work hard to develop ideas and discover new things by using mathematical formulas.

“We are very proud to qualify for first place in this competition and we are introducing three inventions including the idea of ​​cooking eggs with vinegar,” he said.

This activity was also attended by Public and Private universities such as UNTL, University of Oriental, Dili Institute of Technology, UNPAZ, and others.
