UNICEF  support scaling up students reading skills in Timor-Leste

DILI, december 16, 2022 (TATOLI) – The United Nation International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) support scaling up students reading skills by delivering over two million complementary books for the 1st and 2nd cycles of basic education books to the Ministry of Education.

The books offered by UNICEF to Timor-Leste’s Ministry of Education are composed of history books, activities, and exercises for preschoolers through sixth grade, including a guide for teachers to improve general knowledge and as a tool to teach and improve learning activities.

Speaking at the delivery ceremony, Bilal Durani, UNICEF Representative said, UNICEF is delighted to deliver these books to the Ministry of Education to help the children to read.

“The books provided by UNICEF will help children to acquire knowledge through reading,” Durani said in Bairro Pite.

Meanwhile, Minister of Education, Armindo Maia said, the books will be distributed to students in schools across the country to motivate and give students opportunities to learn because: “We promote the reading culture of teachers and students,” he said.

According to Maia, many Timorese are lacked reading habits adding that most students are using their free time playing therefore“I remain you to scale up reading activity to acquire more science and knowledge,’’ He stressed

At one point of this, Minister appealed to all those in charge of the school to make good use of the resource to improve learning and reading activities.

These books are procured and funded by the Global Partnership for Education through the Covid-19 Financial Grant, worth $840,000.
