Govt-TL condemns the attack on Brazilian democratic institutions

DILI, 11 january 2022 (TATOLI) – The Government of Timor-Leste condemned the attack of the supporters of the Brazilian former leader Jair Bolsonaro after they invade congress building. 

“The Government of Timor-Leste expresses its support to the President of the Republic of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who was freely and democratically elected by the Brazilian people and strongly condemns the violence and the attack on democratic institutions,” said in a statement released on Wednesday. 

The Prime Minister, Taur Matan Ruak, said that he is following with “enormous concern the violent and anti-democratic acts that occurred in Brazil” and that “the use of violence to attack democratic institutions is something unacceptable”.

The Spokesperson of the Government, Minister Fidelis Magalhães, on behalf of the Council of Ministers and the entire Government, expressed: “total support to President Lula” and “vehemently repudiated the invasion and attacks on the Three Powers headquarters in Brasília, which represents an attack on the pillars of the democratic rule of law and a threat to democracy”.

On monday (09/11), the President of the Republic, José Ramos-Horta also expressed his concerns following the supporters of Pro-Bolsonaro storming Brazil’s Congress, on sunday (08/01).

“It is the act of extreme gravity, that we all, the countries of the CPLP, European Union, all democratic countries in the world, the United Nation must condemn without equivocation,” President Horta said.
