DILI, 16 january 2023 (TATOLI) – President of the National Parliament, Aniceto Longuinhos Guterres said the electoral calendar for the 2023 General Elections would be decreed based on the proposal of the Government of Timor-Leste.

Guterres made the comments after a meeting with Prime Minister Taur Matan Ruak at the National Parliament, where both leaders discussed preparations for the upcoming Parliamentary Elections.

“It is the competence of the President of the Republic to decree the Electoral Calendar for the upcoming elections, but it has to be based on the government’s proposal. With regard to the Electoral Calendar, it is now up to the government,” Guterres said.

However, he said the President will have to decree the Electoral Calendar in accordance with the law of not exceeding five-year terms of government.

According to Section 86(C) of the Constitution of Timor-Leste, one of the competencies of the President of the Republic is to set the dates for presidential and legislative elections in accordance with the law.

“So, during the meeting, we have a quick discussion about the upcoming elections and therefore date depends on the decision of the government and the President,” he concluded.
