DILI, 19 december 2023 ( TATOLI)– The United Nations Development Programme ( UNDP) and the Secretary of State of Environment ( SSE) today held a meeting to evaluate the project of the Green Climate Fund ( GCF) in Timor – Leste.
The Secretary of State of Environment, Demetrio Amaral, said the Project of GCF had been implemented in Timor – Leste from 2020 to 2023 and will be continued until 2026.
“We held a board meeting with UNDP as a partner for project implementation, to evaluate the project achievement since its implementation in 2020 to 2022 and will continue this project from 2023 to 2026,” the Secretary of State of Environment Demetrio Amaral told TATOLI at the Timor – Plaza on thursday.
Secretariat State of Environment Amaral revealed the GCF project aims to safeguard vulnerable communities and their physical assets from climate change-induced disasters. It also addresses institutional financial and legislative barriers to increase the climate resilience of vulnerable small-scale rural infrastructure.
Amaral explained the Project of GCF is running based on the target consisted of Develop Hazard Mapping and Risk Assessment, Develop Risk Disaster Management and Setting up Spatial Data Infrastructure ( SDI), and Develop National Policies, Regulations, and Guidelines for climate resilient infrastructure adopted.
At the same place, UNDP Residence Representative to Timor- Leste, Mukhtuya Altangerel revealed as the partner of the Government of Timor – Leste UNDP appreciated the achievement of the Project of GCF during 2020 – 2022.
This Project achieved the target such as the capacity building of 200 staff from the Ministry of State Administration, Ministry of Public Works Ministry of Interior- Secretary of State of civil Protection, and Secretary of State of Environment, in addition, this project also had finalized 130 in structure ( 47 rural roads, 25 Irrigation System, 38 Water System’ and 20 Flood Protection in 6 municipalities. Besides that, this project implemented 300 ha of agroforestry and 1200 ha of reforestation in six municipalities.
Meanwhile, the Project Green Climate Fund was implemented in 6 municipalities such as; Aileu, Bacau, Ermera, Likisa, Lautem, and Vikeke, along with the total target of beneficiaries being over 175,840 from 2020 March to 2026 March.
This Project was implemented by the Government counterparts from The Secretary of State for Environment, the Secretary of State for Civil Protection, the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, the Ministry of State Administration, and the Ministry of Public Works with a total budget of $ 59,444,86 which is donated by Green Climate Funds worth $22,356,805, Co-financing from the Government of Timor – Leste worth $ 36,687,062 and budget from UNDP are $ 400,000.
Hopefully, these Projects can continue to safeguard rural communities and their physical assets from climate-induced in across the Timor – Leste.
