DILI, 24 january 2023 (TATOLI) – The President of the Parliamentary Committee G which deals with Education, Youth, Culture, and Citizenship, António Verdial de Sousa, today called on the Government to improve education in the country.

Sousa revealed that the inspection team of Committee G had identified two major problems in education, including the lack of adequate infrastructure and the lack of capacity building and training for teachers.

“I have therefore asked the Government, especially the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (MoEYS) to create new strategies to improve the conditions of schools across the country,” Sousa told Tatoli, at the Hosue of Parliament.

He said that Education Ministry should address the situation of contracted teachers, saying Parliament had approved a budget for the recruitment of 950 new teachers.

“I appreciated the Education Minister’s presentation on the recruitment process of volunteer and contracted teachers,” he explained.

Sousa also urged the government to retire teachers who have just turned 60 to give opportunities to young teachers.

Last year, the government passed a law on the optimal age of retirement for civil servants and administrative agents.
