DILI, 25 january 2023 (TATOLI) – Prime Minister, Taur Matan Ruak, will visit Indonesia next month to discuss Timor-Leste’s preparation for ASEAN membership, and to strengthen economic ties with Indonesia.
“It is important for the leaders of the two countries to discuss Timor-Leste’s preparation for its accession to ASEAN,” Indonesia’s Director-General for Asia-Pacific and African Affairs, Abdul Kadir Jailani, told TATOLI at the Presidential Palace.
He said that Indonesia remains committed to supporting Timor-Leste’s accession to ASEAN: “We hope Timor-Leste will actively participate in this regional organization where Indonesia will continue to support Timor-Leste to ensure that this country is ready to fully participate in ASEAN.”
Prime Minister Ruak and President Joko Widodo will discuss the negotiation on the demarcation and delimitation of boundaries of the countries.
“The demarcation and delimitation of the boundaries have already been discussed at the meeting of President Horta and his Indonesian counterpart, Joko Widodo, last year,” he said.
“At that time, the two heads of state agreed that it is necessary to accelerate the negotiation on the demarcation of the borders of the two countries,” he concluded.
