DILI, january 28, 2023 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, José Ramos Horta, and the Portuguese Ambassador in Timor-Leste, Manuela Bairos, this Friday, visited the Franciscan Missionary Sisters School of Laleia, in Manatuto.
During the visit, President Horta praised the school’s teaching model, saying it marked a positive step towards the development of Timorese education, especially in Laleia.
“The government of Portugal is financing the construction of the school, which currently accommodates 180 children”, said President Horta in a statement seen by Tatoli.
The residents of Laleia offered about one hectare of land. A residence for Franciscan Sister is also being built in the space offered. It is hoped that the construction, which has the support of Xanana Gusmão and Ramos Horta, will be completed in the coming months.
The Coordinator of the Laleia Franciscan Congregation, Mother Albina, appreciated the visit of the Head of State and the Ambassador of Portugal, saying that the school was already in operation and registration is currently open, emphasizing that the teaching-learning process was guided by the Portuguese and Timorese curriculum.
The work, which was budgeted at US$1.4 million, was carried out by the Portuguese company CC Construção.
The opening of the building is scheduled for mid-April.
