Twenty-four political parties to compete in 21-may parliamentary elections

DILI, 15 february 2023 (TATOLI) – The National Election Commission (NEC) has registered 24 political parties to compete in the next general elections which will take place on may 21, 2023. 

“We have registered 24 political parties to compete in the 2023 parliamentary elections. These political parties have met the criteria and are eligible to run in the next elections,” CNE Secretary, Odete Maria Belo told reporters in, Dili today. 

The 24 political parties eligible to run in the next elections included APMT, KHUNTO, PEP, PST, CNRT, PDR, PR, UDT, PDC, PMLPM, PLP, PD, UNDERTIM, PUDD, PTD, Frente Mudança, PSD, FRETILIN, PMDA, CASDT, PDRT, PND, Green and so on. 

She said six smaller parties did not meet the criteria to run in upcoming elections. They are KOTA, ASDT, PTT, PNT, PUN, PDN, and PARENTIL.

The Director General of the Technical Secretariat for Electoral Administration (STAE), Acilino Manuel Branco also revealed that 24 political parties will contest the next general elections.  

The President of the Republic, José Ramos Horta, on monday, announced 21 May as the date for Timor-Leste’s next parliamentary elections.
