Veterans Day: Aniceto Guterres calls for unity to boost national development

DILI, 03 march 2023 (TATOLI) – The President of the National Parliament, Aniceto Guterres calls for national unity to boost national development to realize the veterans’ dream of ensuring the welfare of the people.

Guterres made the call on the sidelines of the celebration of National Veterans Day with the theme: “National Unity Strengthened to Boost National Development.”

He said national development requires a number of indispensable prerequisites: “So we need to ensure that there is no place for discrimination, misinformation, disinformation, and defamation. If we do not fulfill these prerequisites, then there will be no progress in national development.”

Guterres said that despite the progress made in the last two decades, there are still issues that need to be addressed, namely poverty, and malnutrition, just to name a few.

“To ensure integrated development in the country, we must professionally exercise our duty to ensure that our people live with dignity,” Guterres said in his remarks at the commemoration of the National Veterans Day, at the Palace of Government, today.

Guterres said that it is necessary for every citizen to reflect on their faults and weaknesses to forge integrity, unity, and collaboration to ensure the social, economic, and political development of the country.

He called on all citizens to honor and respect the veterans, martyrs, and heroes, who sacrificed their lives for the self-determination of the country: “Our veterans have always been courageous and determined to find solutions for the nation.”

“To those in power, to young people, and all citizens, let us pay our respect and tribute to our martyrs and national heroes, both men and women, including Nicolau dos Reis Lobato, Nino Konis Santana, Rosa Muki Bonaparte, Maria Tapo, just to name a few. Let us also pay our respect to the Timorese people who have kept up the resistance for 24 years.”

“The only thing we owe to our veterans, martyrs, and national heroes is our will and ability to transform this beautiful country into a peaceful place for people to live in justice, prosperity, fraternity, and solidarity,” he emphasized.
