DILI, 7 march 2023 (TATOLI)- Timor-Leste National Police (PNTL) calls the public to reduce domestic Violence against women in Timor-Leste.

Dili municipality commander of PNTL, Superintendent Natércia Eufrásia Soares Martins said in the celebration of women’s International day, Timor-Leste including the world reflecting on the UN global theme Digital: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality.

This theme, Martins said, gives an idea of how to use technology to share information with others regarding the prevention and elimination of domestic violence against women.

“I am calling to the public to reduce the number of domestic violence against women and girls across the Territories of Timor-Leste. On this international women’s day we have to share information on the prevention of Domestic violence,’’ Martins told Journalists in Hotel Timor, this Tuesday.

Therefore the reflection on this event focused on the use of social media platforms to reduce domestic violence that occurs at the societal level.

“It is everyone’s responsibility to help reduce all types of violence. Everyone is required to share appropriate information to enhance community knowledge to avoid domestic violence against women while avoiding using technology to raise household conflict at the community level,”She said.

Martins also stated that, The Law against Domestic Violence (LADV) was passed by the National Parliament on May 3, 2010, and was officially published as Law N° 7/2010.

This law reinforces the provisions of the Penal Code in addition to establishing a mechanism to prevent DV, promote victims’ rights and guarantee the protection of victims. As such, the law strengthens the support for victims and defines the responsibilities of different government institutions and their collaboration with civil society organizations.

Therefore Martins said, the victims who suffered from gender-based violence or any type of violence should be informed to the competent authorities to process their issue legally.
