DILI, 13 march 2023 (TATOLI) – The Sri Lankan government pledged to support Timor-Leste in developing human capital through scholarships for young Timorese to pursue higher education degrees in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lankan authorities committed in a bilateral meeting between Timor-Leste, and Sri Lanka on the sidelines of the Fifth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5) in Doha, Qatar.
“We had a positive result in our meeting with Sri Lanka. They are ready to offer scholarships to the Timorese people,” Maria Angelina Lopes Sarmento said in the National Parliament.
MP Sarmento represents the National Parliament at the LDC5 conference among other Timorese leaders, including the President of the Republic, José Ramos Horta, Minister of Finance, Rui Augusto Gomes, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (MoFAC), Adaljiza Magno and others.
Sarmiento, therefore, said that it is important for Timor-Leste and Sri Lanka to establish bilateral relations to facilitate Timorese students to study in Sri Lanka.
“I would like to inform the Ministry of Higher Education, science, and Culture (MoHSC) that it needs to take into consideration that Sri Lanka has expressed interest to take Timorese people to study in Sri Lanka,” she said.
Sri Lanka achieved universal coverage for primary and lower secondary education, gender parity at all levels of education, and a high literacy rate.
