Timor-Leste highlights education as foundation for peace at UN Human Rights Summit
DÍLI, 30 July 2026 (TATOLI) – The Permanent Mission of Timor-Leste to the United Nations is honored to co-sponsor once again the International Human Rights Summit, together with Youth for Human Rights International. The 20th Summit this year focuses on the theme “Education for Peace – A 25-Year Legacy.”
In his opening remarks, Ambassador Dionisio Babo Soares, Permanent Representative of Timor-Leste to the UN, highlighted the importance of youth in advancing human rights and building a more peaceful and inclusive world. He also paid tribute to Madam Mary Shuttleworth for her 25 years of leadership in promoting human rights education and empowering young people.
He emphasized that education is the foundation of all human rights, enabling individuals to participate in democracy, promote equality, and contribute to society. Citing international human rights instruments, he stressed that education is a shared responsibility of families, communities, governments, and the international community.
Drawing on global experience and the example of Timor-Leste, the Ambassador underlined that investment in education strengthens peace, resilience, and sustainable development. He further highlighted Timor-Leste’s commitment to education through its Constitution and its efforts to promote youth leadership, civic participation, and respect for human rights.
Ambassador Babo Soares concluded by reaffirming that education is a universal human right and the strongest foundation for lasting peace. He called on all stakeholders to ensure every child has access to quality education, recognizing that empowering future generations through learning is essential to protecting human rights and building a better world.
Timorese Youth representative also addressed the Summit, emphasizing that gender equality is a fundamental human right and essential for sustainable development. While Timor-Leste has made important progress in protecting and empowering women and girls, the delegate called for continued investment in education, stronger protections, and collective action to ensure equal opportunities for all.
