World Bank and MTCI sign MoU to provide TIP to support export and import activities

DILI, 30 march 2023 (TATOLI)- World Bank and the Minister of Tourism Trade and Industry (MoTTI) signed a Memorandum of Understand (MoU) to establish Trade Informative Portal (TIP), aiming to provide business information on trade and import activities.

Deputy Minister of MoTTI, Domingos Lopes Antunes said MTCI plans to create an informative trade portal, aiming to share information on import and export activities to the public, especially for business persons.

“We request support from the World Bank to help establish a trade informative platform. It is the initial step that we are in the coordination process for establishing this portal,’’ Deputy Minister of MTCI, Domingos Lopes Antunes told TATOLI in the showcasing agreement documents in Beora, wedensday.

Antunes said it is critical to boosting Timor-Leste’s strong trade facility, especially to ensure that all economic actors in the trade ecosystem, primarily the private sectors are fully informed. Thus, the investors have readily available information to support their export and import activities.

Work Bank Country Director, Bernard Harborne said it is an initial step to cooperate with MTIC to be dealt with a Memorandum of Understanding for the establishment of a Trade informative Portal (ITP).

“We are providing advisory support or technical assistance for the Minister of Tourism Commerce and Industry to share trade information to the public and especially for the business persons,” He said

He added that World Bank provided lots of technical assistance on trade facilitation to the vice minister and his team in the last two years.

It is all about trade and making it easy for Timorese farmers to invest more in coffee growth, cassava, and others that can be exported overseas. Thus, the company can efficiently process its product to international markets.

“It is vital for ITP to help farmers and companies to send their products overseas. The portal platform can be accessed on the internet,’’ He concluded

As the process moves forward, the bank’s TIP experts will work very closely with the MTCI trade officials and all the other line agencies inter Minister of Finance, Office of the Minister of the Coordinating Economic Affairs, CUSTOMS, Trade Invest Timor-Leste, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Minister of Agriculture and fisheries and others.

It is required to start the consultation, research, data collection, and other necessary steps to ensure the TIP is comprehensive and inclusive as possible.

The TIP portal is in the process of establishment with the support of the World Bank in Timor-Leste. It will be published after MTIC concluded this program this year.
