DILI, 03 march 2023 (TATOLI) – The government of Timor-Leste, under the leadership of Prime Minister Taur Matan Ruak, has built 9,854 houses (Uma Naroman ba Povu) for incapacitated families throughout the country between 2021 and 2023.
In 2021, a total of 1,254 houses were built, and the number was increased to 5,000 in 2022. Meanwhile, in the first quarter of 2023 alone, the government has built 3,600 houses, and the number is expected to increase.
Timor-Leste’s Minister of Finance, Rui Augusto Gomes, revealed that the construction of the 9,854 houses cost around US$188.9.
Last year, the government also distributed over 5,000 roofing zinc for the rehabilitation of the houses of the communities.
“The budget for the purchase of the roofing zinc came from the State Budget,” Gomes said.
Over 90,000 local workers have been employed under the Uma Naroman ba Povu projects.
He said that 70% of project expenditure circulates in the communities for the purchase of local construction materials such as sand, rock, and timber.
The implementation of the Uma Naroman ba Povu project is in line with the government’s strategic plan to ensure healthy living, increase life expectancy, and so on.
