DILI, 05 april 2023 (TATOLI) – The Government approved the Portuguese language as the medium of instruction and teaching in the Timor-Leste education system with Tetum and other national languages assuming a supporting role.
The proposal was presented by the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Culture, Longuinhos dos Santos.
Several norms regarding preschool, primary, and secondary education levels are also amended in order to recognize the importance of learning the Portuguese language in the national education sector.
According to the Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Fidelis Manuel Leite Magalhães, several norms regarding preschool, primary, and secondary education levels were also altered in order to recognize the importance of learning the Portuguese language in the education sector.
“With this diploma, and in order to eliminate injustices in the attribution of degrees and diplomas in technical higher education, it will be possible for higher technical education institutions to attribute degrees and diplomas such as the associate, bachelor, and master degrees,” Magalhães said at the Government Palace, today.
The approval of the diploma is also intended to allow for the award of a master’s degree after completion of a higher education course lasting twelve semesters, including an integrated and undividable bachelor’s degree, corresponding to the first eight semesters of the integrated master’s degree course.
“With the proposed amendment, it is also defined that distance learning should have implemented in all levels and areas of Timorese national education”, he concluded.
