DILI, 23 may 2023 (TATOLI)- The United States congratulates Timor-Leste on its parliamentary elections.
The message of congratulation was conveyed by the Department spoken person of U.S. MATTHEW MILLIER in a statement published today by the U.S. Embassy in Dili.
“We commend Timorese authorities for administering a free, fair, and transparent election and the hundreds of thousands of Timorese voters who peacefully cast their ballots and made their voices heard,”
Miller said, this election reflects the commitment of the people of Timor-Leste to democracy and peaceful political processes and serves as an inspiration for democracy globally.
“We wish the newly elected leaders success in their endeavors to serve Timor-Leste and its people and to build a secure, inclusive, and prosperous society,” he concluded
The 2023 Parliamentary Elections were held on may 21, The Technical Secretariat for Electoral Administration (STAE) registered a total of 890,145 Timorese voters who participated in Sunday’s Parliamentary Elections.
Seventeen parties are competing in the election, making Timor-Leste one of the most democratic countries in the Southeast Asian region.
The temporary result of the parliamentary election Gusmão’s party, the National Congress for Timorese Reconstruction (CNRT) secures a big victory over the ruling parties – the Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor (FRETILIN), People’s Liberation Party (PLP), and Kmanek Haburas Unidade Nasional Timor Oan (KHUNTO).
With all votes counted, Gusmão’s party was on 41.62 percent of the votes — a 16-point lead over the leading ruling party FRETILIN of the former Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri, which had 25.75 percent, PLP of the current Prime Minister Taur Matan Ruak with 5.88 percent, and KHUNTO received 7,52 percent of the votes.
As STAE has concluded the municipal tabulation, the national tabulation will take place from 24 to 27 May.
The result of the national tabulation would be officially announced by the Court of Appeal and published in the Official Gazette of the President of the Republic, on june 7.
Sunday’s election is Timor-Leste’s sixth parliamentary election and the last election was held in May 2018, with the EU observation mission finding that the elections were “transparent, well-managed and credible” and that they generally ran in a peaceful and orderly manner, despite some violent incidents during the campaign period.
Elections are held every five years using a party-list proportional representation voting system to elect 65 members to the National Parliament. Voting is voluntary for all Timorese citizens over the age of 17.
