President Horta and members of gov’t pay last respects to Isabel Ruak

DILI, june 19, 2023 (TATOLI) — President of Republic, José Ramos Horta and members of government paying their respects Monday to the late Isabel Ferreira whose body is laying at the residence of Prime Minister, Taur Matan Ruak in Metiaut Dili.

Various Government Institutions, diplomats, and religious leaders also pay respect to late Isabel Ferreira’s body, in her residence from 9:00 am TLH.

“It is deeply saddened that we came here with our family, all the employees from the Council of Minister’s office, paying our last respects to the late Isabel Ferreira. Other members of the Government came to show solidarity to the Prime Minister and the family,” said the Minister for the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Fidelis Leite Magalhães.

According to Magalhães, the late Isabel Ferreira was a person who made a significant contribution to Timor-Leste, especially as a human rights activist and in various other organizations.

“After getting married, she dedicated herself to social and NGO activities. We are grateful for every contribution that has been made and grieve and remain loyal to the Prime Minister and the children who are now left behind,” he said.

The Head of State, José Ramos Horta arrived at Prime Minister’s residence at 11:00, President was not giving any comment after the visit.

Other members of states also presented: President of the High Court, Deolindo dos Santos, President of the National Parliament, Aniceto Guterres, NGOs, members of the Government, Diplomats, friends, and extended family of the deceased.

Until now, there has been no decision regarding the funeral process for the late Isabel da Costa Ferreira.

Isabel da Costa Ferreira was born in Same Manufahi municipality on 15 April 1974, Ferreira, who turned 49 years old in April, is a lawyer, politician, former deputy, and candidate in the 2022 presidential election.

Isabel Ferreira is the second youngest daughter of Mateus Ferreira and Ana Flora de Jesus Ferreira, Ferreira has 13 siblings. 

Ferreira began studying law in Indonesia and devoted much of her life to human rights issues, denouncing abuses committed during the Indonesian occupation.

She took her last breath on June 18, 2023, at the age of 49 due to colon cancer. She was the First Lady of Timor Leste from 2012 to 2017.

Isabel da Costa Ferreira and Taur Matan Ruak married in May 2001 and the couple has three children, one boy named Quesadhip and two girls named Lola no Tamarisa.
