DILI, 22 june 2023 (TATOLI) – The Executive Director of the Judicial System Monitoring Programme (JSMP), Ana Paula Marçal, has called on the newly elected President of the National Parliament, Maria Fernanda Lay, to realize the campaign promises for the amendment of the lifelong pension law, which only benefited a small group of people.
JSMP also urged the new parliament to conduct a review of the Timor-Leste Constitution within its five-year mandate.
“From day one, we have always advocated for the amendment of lifelong pension law and the revision of the Constitution. These are two of the main issues we recommend the new parliament to consider during its five-year mandate,” Marçal said after the swearing-in ceremony of the new 65 MPs at the National Parliament, today.
Marçal said that the new MPs have to change the lifelong pension law in order to ensure equal treatment of all citizens in the country.
“We believe that the new parliament will consider the amendment of the life pension law as one of its top priorities. We will continue to advocate for the alteration of the law,” she said.
Marçal stressed that some of the articles of the national constitution are no longer relevant to the reality of the country and need to be revised.
The newly elected House Speaker, Maria Fernanda Lay, has pledged that the Lifelong Pension Law will be amended during her mandate.
She hoped that all parties would come together to amend the law, adding that amending the law would be one of her priorities.
