DILI, 11 july 2023 (TATOLI) Timor-Leste’s National Logistics Centre (NLC) will import over 4,000 tons of rice from Vietnam and India.

Three companies—Mamatelu, Emerais Filgon, and Miramar—will be responsible for importing rice from the two countries,” CLN director of transport and logistics Tito da Costa told TATOLI in Dili today.

Of the 4,215 tons of rice, Mamatelu will import 1,400 tons, Zmerais Filgon will import 1,400 tons, and Miramar will import 1,415 tons.

The importation of rice is intended to ensure that rice supplies in CLN warehouses are adequate to prevent starvation in Timor-Leste.

Timor-Leste has been significantly reliant on imported rice from Thailand and Vietnam, two of the world’s top rice suppliers.

Many expected the new government, led by Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, to make significant expenditures in agriculture to enhance national rice output and secure national food security.

The VIII Constitutional Government set aside $6 million for the procurement of both domestic and imported rice.

The National Logistics Center (NLC) imported over 5,000 tons of rice from Vietnam in 2022.
