DILI, 21 July 2023 (TATOLI) – The owner of Fly Timor, Pedro Carascalão, said that Timor-Leste still faces a labor shortage in the aviation industry, saying the government needs to prioritize human resources to develop the aviation industry in Timor-Leste.

“I observe that Timor Leste is still facing a shortage of human resources in the aviation industry, Timor Leste needs to prioritize human resources in the aviation sector to prevent dependence on the international aviation industry from operating in Timor Leste,”Carascalão, told reporters at President Nicolao Loboto International Airport in Dili.

In this regard, his party plans to provide opportunities for Timor Leste pilots and other fresh graduates from aviation academies to prepare them to manage and operate aircraft in Timor Leste.

“We have acquired three small aircraft that will be used by Timor Leste pilots to increase flying hours. With this, we will prepare human resources to operate commercial aircraft and will not depend on international pilots,” he said.

Carascalão explained the three aircraft, one of which will be used to transport patients and tourists and the other will be used exclusively for training Timorese pilots for employers, professional aviation training is essential, adding that “more experience” leads to “greater knowledge” and, perhaps, in the case of pilots, to pilot larger aircraft.

In the same place the Minister of Transportation and Communications (MTC), Miguel Manetelo appreciated this initiative and is committed to working with Fly Timor to prepare human resources to control the aviation industry.

“The government will work with Fly Timor to prioritize the aviation industry and also prepare human resources in Timor Leste going forward,” he concluded.
