DILI, 24 july 2023 (TATOLI)- DILI, 24 july 2023 (TATOLI)- Over 30 Officials from Timor-Leste National Police (PNTL), PCIC, and the Attorney General’s Office (OPG) are set to attend the comprehensive training program in cybercrime investigations, which took place at the National Institute of Public Administration (INAP) in Comoros, from 24 to 28 July.
In a statement seen by Tatoli stated that the training was held through the collaboration between the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) with law enforcement agencies in Timor-Leste to increase Cybercrime Expertise to combat GBV (Gender Based Violence).
The training was also held as part of the activities of the United Nations Joint Project “Hamutuk ba Igualdade (Together for Equality: Preventing and Responding to Gender-Based Violence in Timor-Leste)”, funded by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).
“30 participants including 10 representatives each from the PNTL, PCIC, and the Attorney General’s Office (OPG), the program aims to provide participants with a broad understanding of cybercrime investigation methodologies, digital forensics, and best practices in handling cyber evidence,” the statement wrote.

It is said that the training is delivered by the Korea National Police University (KNPU) and joined forces with the Timor-Leste National Police (PNTL), Office of the Attorney General (OPG), and Timor-Leste Police Scientific Criminal Investigation (PCIC) to ensure the development of this customized training and serve as an introductory course on cybercrime investigation.
“This event highlighted the importance of international collaboration, with KNPU playing an important role in assessing and formulating action plans for each participating institution. This strategic alliance demonstrates Korea’s commitment to forging a strong relationship with the Timor Leste police and advancing future cooperation.” wrote the statement.
The South Korean Ambassador, SHIN Mantaek, who was present at the event, underscored the importance of this initiative in strengthening relations between countries and equipping Timor-Leste with the necessary tools to fight cybercrime effectively.
In a significant step towards strengthening cybercrime investigative capabilities in Timor-Leste, UNDP is also working closely with the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to offer follow-up training provided by a focus on gender, sexual crimes, and human trafficking from 7 to 9 of August.
“Going forward, UNDP promotes ongoing cooperation and exchange of knowledge among all stakeholders involved. Timor-Leste’s journey toward a secure and resilient digital landscape requires continued dedication, and this training marks an important step in that direction,” said the statement.
The organization urges all concerned parties to take an active role in enhancing cybercrime investigation capacity for a more secure and digitally empowered country. UNDP reiterated its commitment to support countries in building resilience against cyber threats and promoting gender equality.
“By combining the strengths of UNDP, IOM, UN Women, and Timorese justice and law enforcement agencies (OPG, PNTL, and PCIC) we aim to empower people at all levels of society with the skills and expertise needed to fight cybercrime and contribute to a society in which all individuals can live without fear of violence or discrimination.”
