KOICA awards scholarships to four govt officers for Advanced Studies in Critical Areas

Dili, 11, august 2023 (TOTOLI) – The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) awarded a scholarship to four Timor-Leste government officers for advanced studies in critical areas of development in 2023.

According to an official note from KOICA accessed by Tatoli Agency said The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2023 KOICA Scholarship, an initiative designed to empower and equip government officers from Timor-Leste with the necessary skills and knowledge to drive sustainable development and tackle pressing challenges in their country.

“This year, four outstanding individuals have been selected to pursue advanced degrees in vital fields, including the Control of Infectious Disease, Asian Capacity Development on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and Urban Development,’’ note said

The statement added that the KOICA Scholarship program is a testament to the enduring commitment of the Republic of Korea to foster global partnerships and contribute to capacity-building in developing countries. As part of its comprehensive approach to international cooperation, KOICA has collaborated closely with the Timor-Leste government to identify candidates who demonstrate exceptional leadership potential and a genuine dedication to effecting positive change in their communities.

Statement emphasized that the KOICA Scholarship not only covers the educational expenses of the recipients but also provides a holistic learning experience, including cultural immersion and professional networking opportunities.

“Upon their return to Timor-Leste, the scholars will be ideally positioned to leverage their newfound knowledge and skills to drive meaningful change in their respective fields and contribute to the overall development of the nation.” it said.

KOICA remains committed to fostering enduring partnerships and enabling capacity development across the globe. The agency extends its heartfelt congratulations to the recipients of the 2023 KOICA Scholarship and looks forward to witnessing the positive impact they will undoubtedly make in Timor-Leste.

The four deserving recipients of the 2023 KOICA Scholarship from Timor-Leste are:

Mr. Hugo Immanuel Garcia, an esteemed civil servant, has been chosen for the Asian Capacity Development program on SDGs at Seoul National University. His academic journey will equip him with the skills to contribute to Timor-Leste’s sustainable development agenda, aligning with global efforts to achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

Ms. Eva Engracia Soares Tilman and Ms. Belita dos Santos Cruz, two government health officials, will pursue a program in the Control of Infectious Disease at Yonsei University. Their studies will focus on implementing effective strategies to combat and manage infectious diseases, contributing to improved healthcare and public well-being in Timor-Leste.

Ms. Maria Soares Pereira Gusmao, a visionary public servant, has been selected for the Urban Development program in the University of Seoul: International School of Urban Sciences. Her studies will empower her to lead initiatives that create resilient and well-planned cities, thus it will contribute to the nation’s social and economic progress.
