73% of higher education in Timor-Leste has accreditation at level C

DILI, 18 august 2023 (TATOLI)— The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Culture (MHESC), through the National Agency for the Study of Evaluation and Academic Accreditation (ANAAA), evaluated 73% of academic programs in all higher education institutions in Timor-Leste with accreditation C.

Minister of MHESC, José Honorio da Costa Gerónimo, said the objective of meeting with all higher education institutions in Timor-Leste is to hear opinions on the problems encountered by all public and private universities and to request that the government improve in the future.

“After 20 years, we see that our higher education institutions, ranging from universities to institutes, out of 151 programs evaluated by ANAAA, around 73% of our higher education institutions are still at accreditation level C,” said the Minister of MESSK, José Honorio da Costa Gerónimo, to reporters after a meeting at the Novo Turismo Hotel Dili this friday.

The National University of Timor Lorosa’e (UNTL) was added as a government university institution, which only has an A accreditation level in engineering academic programs, and most of them have a C accreditation level.

“Therefore, as MoHESC, we will work with them so that we can bring better higher education in the future, and the government also continues to support all private universities in TL so that they can run well by providing technical assistance,” he explained.

The Minister hopes that all opinions, complaints, or input provided by the rectors from the 19 higher education agencies can help build and develop quality higher education in TL.

“The Constitutional Government IX through MESSK has 23 programs, and the most important programs are to deal with problems faced by all agencies so that MESSK can support assistants so as to provide quality education in the future,” he said.

The Executive Director of ANAA, Nilton Dementino Paiva, stated that ANAAA was present at the meeting to evaluate the participation of all public agencies and see the obstacles and problems faced by all PT agencies so that they can evaluate according to university standards.

“The requirements for obtaining accreditation are, firstly, that it must have a clear mission and vision, a curriculum, the Learning of Come, adequate human resources, have graduated, have infrastructure, financial support, and plan for five years,” he explained.

The Chancellor of the National University of da Paz (UNPAZ), Adolmando Amaral, hopes that MESSK can work well with all public agencies to provide quality higher education.
