DILI, 25 august 2023 (TATOLI) – The new Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Indonesia and non-resident Ambassador to Timor-Leste, Dominic Jermey presented his credentials to the President of Republic, José Ramos-Horta on friday (25/08).
Ambassador Jermey said: “I am delighted to return to Timor-Leste, a country and people whose journey I have followed closely since being posted to Dili over 20 years ago. It is a great privilege and honour for me to present my credentials to the President of Timor-Leste, my dear friend His Excellency Mr José Ramos-Horta,” Ambassador said in a statement, on friday.
He said that Timor-Leste matters greatly to the UK, and as Dialogue Partner to ASEAN: “We fully support Timor-Leste’s smooth accession into the regional bloc.”
“Our partnership with Timor-Leste continues to grow, focused on economic development, health and nutrition, climate adaptation and education.” Jermey said.
He said the UK’s flagship scholarship programme, Chevening, has attracted many talented students to study for their Master’s Degrees at universities in the UK, and now boasts over 50 alumni: “The window for application opens again in September, and I would encourage more students to apply, so that they can learn new skills and gain experience in the UK to help develop and build Timor-Leste’s future.”
“I very much look forward to playing my own role, as Non-Resident British Ambassador to Timor-Leste, in further strengthening the strong bilateral relationship. I’m looking forward to coming back to this beautiful country soon, and having the chance renew old acquaintances and establish new connections between our two countries,” he said.
Dominic Jermey was appointed to become His Majesty’s Ambassador to Indonesia and Timor-Leste in 2023. Dominic’s previous diplomatic postings include serving as HM Ambassador to Afghanistan (2016-17) and to the United Arab Emirates (2010–14).
Dominic was Managing Director and Chief Executive of the UK’s inward investment and export support agency, UK Trade and Investment from 2007-2010 and 2014-15.
In 1999-2000, Dominic was British Representative to the UN Transitional Administration in East Timor, reporting to the UK Ambassador in Jakarta.
Dominic has also served in Pakistan, Spain, Macedonia and he headed the UK’s crisis team in Thailand following the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami.
Dominic was Director General of the conservation science NGO, the Zoological Society of London, from 2017-2022.
Prior to joining the diplomatic service, Dominic was a corporate financier at investment bank, Schroders. Dominic has been a trustee of UK international development NGO CAFOD since 2008.
Dominic has a lifelong passion for wildlife conservation, theatre & the arts. He is a keen diver and a slow triathlete.
