DILI, september 13, 2023 (TATOLI) – Hélder Lopes was sworn in today, by Prime Minister, Xanana Gusmão, as the new Governor of the Central Bank of Timor-Leste (BCTL).
In his speech, at the facilities of that banking institution, Xanana Gusmão expressed his confidence in the new Governor of BCTL, stating that he believes “he will assume leadership roles with the responsibility of someone who assumes a commitment to public service towards the State and the people of Timor -East”.
According to the Head of Government, “the financial sector occupies a crucial place in contributing to the economic development of Timor-Leste, with the Central Bank being responsible for mobilizing the country’s savings resources effectively and efficiently, as well as managing foreign investment capital resources.
For Xanana Gusmão, the BCTL plays a fundamental role in the execution of payments, inherent to economic dynamics and commercial development, engines of economic growth, and, consequently, the well-being of citizens.
“I believe that the Central Bank can be an important partner for the Government, as a solid and independent institution, for defining national policies that lead the country to progress, prosperity, and well-being for all Timorese”.
Helder Lopes, in response, committed to working in partnership with BCTL employees to develop the institution and ensure inclusive, competitive, and sustainable efficiency and effectiveness that contribute to the country’s economic growth.
Helder Lopes replaces the outgoing Governor, Abraão de Vasconcelos, who led the Central Bank since its foundation in 2011, replacing the previous Banking Payments Authority (ABP).
