Rangel: ASEAN Secretariat  and the Development Partners ready to support Timor-Leste’s s accession to ASEAN

DILI, 15 september 2023 ( TATOLI)– The Deputy Minister for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Milena Maria da Costa Rangel, said currently ASEAN Secretariat in Timor – Leste including the Development Partners ready to support Timor – Leste’s accession to ASEAN.

“Timor-Leste’s preparation to integrate to the ASEAN region is not done by ourselves but we have the ASEAN Secretariat to guide us to do the preparation based on the ASEAN roadmap, baside we also have the dialogue partners such as; ASEAN Development Bank (ADB), World Bank, United States, Japan, South Korea, Australia New Zealand to support Timor – Leste in accession to ASEAN,” the Deputy Minister for ASEAN Affairs Milena Rangel, told TATOLI in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Pantai Kelapa Dili.

Rangel added that all the dialogue partners have their action plan to support Timor-Leste based on the demands of the ASEAN roadmap therefore ASEAN Secretariat together with the dialogue partners had provided the capacity building training to the minsterial ‘ s staff as one of the preparations for human resources prior to integrate the ASEAN regional.

“Based on the roadmap of ASEAN Timor – Leste must prepare the human resources, infrastructure such as road, airport internet, port, and hotels prior to being accepted as the full membership of ASEAN, so ASEAN Secretariat and Development partners ‘ support is very crucial to guide us in conducting the ASEAN roadmap because they have been many experiences. The role of the ASEAN Secretariat and the dialogue partners in Timor-Leste is very crucial to support us in designing the model of infrastructure when Timor-Leste becomes a full member of ASEAN and the Presidency of ASEAN. 

Based on the plan Timor – TimorLeste will be accepted to become a full member of the ASEAN in 2025 by the Indonesian Presidency, therefore Timor -Leste, currently together with the ASEAN Secretariat and the dialogue partners through its Embassy in Timor – has conducted some preparations to empower the interministerial ‘ s staff through the capacity building in three ASEAN pillar such as; ASEAN Economic Comunity ( AEC) ASEAN Socio Culture Comunity ( ASCC) and the ASEAN Security Community ( ASC) beside of that Timor -Leste committed to fulfilling all requirements of ASEAN roadmap such as infrastructure of hotels, roads, airport, port telecommunication, and related infrastructure as one the preparation before enter to become the full member of ASEAN. 

Previously ASEAN summit in Cambodia had admitted Timor-Leste as the observer status therefore Timor-Leste is permitted actively to participate actively in all activities of ASEAN, Observed status Timor-Leste will gain more experience to prepare before becoming a full member of ASEAN 2025.
