DILI, 05 october 2023 (TATOLI) – The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Forestry, through the National Seeds Council (CNS), will soon launch the introduction of four different crop seeds – brown rice, red cut short beans, dhuha beans (local name) and Timor hybrid corn.

The introduction of these seeds aims to increase food production in order to combat food insecurity and malnutrition in Timor-Leste.

These seeds will be distributed to local farmers to increase local food production to prevent famine in the country.

The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Forestry, Marcos da Cruz, said that the NSC has been carrying out research since 2020 to study the genotypes of these seeds.

According to the preliminary results of the research, these seeds have economic value, are rich in nutrients, are climate-resistant, and are highly productive.

Minister Cruz said seed testing is required to assess the seed quality before launching and distributing to farmers.

A South Korean seed expert will be invited to carry out the seed quality assessment together with local experts.

NSC representative Gil Rangel said: “We discussed our findings with Minister Cruz for the process of validating the seeds before introducing them to the communities.”
