DILI, 16 october 2023 (TATOLI) – Two Timorese medical students, Esmeraldito Ferreira and Teresinha Alves, attended the Health Law Conference in Shanghai, China.
Both students are currently studying medicine at Fudan University, in Shanghai, China.
“I hope that what I learned at the conference can contribute to the development of Timor-Leste,” Esmeraldito Ferreira said in a statement.
The event aimed to discuss improving medical school and training, strengthening healthcare infrastructure, and improving public health responses.
The conference was organized by prestigious Chinese universities, which are usually well attended by medical interns and junior doctors from all over the world.
The conference was a privileged space for the dissemination of cutting-edge technologies that enable detailed diagnoses for case-by-case treatments.
Advice on legislative changes compatible with the latest innovations in the field of medicine was also being discussed at the conference, in order to ensure access to modern medicine for wider populations.
Intellectual property laws in international law to make new medical technologies more accessible and quicker to respond to in underdeveloped and poor countries in order to save lives are also on the agenda.
It was a beneficial experience for both Esmeraldito Ferreira and Teresinha Alves, who learned first-hand about these new medical technologies.
Teresinha Alves is currently doing her internship at Huashan Hospital, said in a statement that it was as “a privilege” to represent Fudan University to attend the conference, adding it gave her such a good opportunity to meet with Shanghai leaders to discuss the development of the health sector.
