New Zealand Ambassador awarded the Order of Timor-Leste

DILI, 30 december 2023 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, José Ramos-Horta, on thursday, awarded the Order of Timor-Leste to the New Zealand Ambassador Philip Hewitt, after serving a four-year diplomatic mission in Timor-Leste.

During his mission, Ambassador Hewitt worked tirelessly to promote friendship between the two peoples, reaffirm peace, and strengthen national stability.

On may 13, 2019, Ambassador Hewitt presented his credentials to the former President of the Republic, Francisco Guterres Lú-Olo, to begin his diplomatic mission in the country.

The Head of State recalled that New Zealand supported Timor-Leste in the fight against COVID-19: “Therefore, it’s important to recognize his contribution to the country. Ambassador Hewitt was very dedicated to supporting Timor-Leste in the fight against COVID-19 between 2020 and 2021. We appreciate and congratulate his contribution to the country.”

The Head of State said New Zealand has already provided around US$20 million to support various sectors in the country, especially in education.

Hewitt thanked the President of the Republic and the Timorese people for the award: “I thank the Timorese people and the Head of State for the award. New Zealand will continue to support Timor-Leste.”
